Garden Tips from Fox's

Pre-emergent is a weed control product that prevents seeds from germinating. This product is great when trying to prevent weeds that come from seed, such as crabgrass, spurge and goatheads. It does not however prevent weeds that come back from roots, like bindweed. We have pre-emergent granules from Hi-Yield as well as one mixed with fertilizer that would be a great first application for your lawn. It’s a good idea to get your first application of pre-emergent down around the first of April. Just remember to re-apply it 60 days later to keep those weeds away.

Natural Guard Humic, the product formerly known as Activator is a great soil conditioner that helps break down organic matter such as lawn thatch. Humic increases nutrient uptake and lowers soil ph. It is an ideal soil conditioner for our area and can be applied anytime to lawns, flower beds, gardens or even trees.

The forecast looks like good grass seed planting temperatures. Loosen the top layer of soil, spread some seed and starter fertilizer, lightly cover with top soil or straw mulch and keep moist. With good weather conditions the grass will start sprouting in 2-3 weeks. We sell bulk seed so you can get as much or little as you need, whether you’re filling in bare spots or starting a new lawn.

We have only heard of minor damage on bedding plants, but trees were slightly damaged. Trim any branches that are broken and spray a small amount of pruning sealer on the tree's fresh cut. Just a reminder that if you applied a pre-emergence in mid March or April, it’s time to reapply this product to keep from getting weeds sprouting up later in the summer. It is also time to reapply fertilizer to the lawn to help it keep that deep green color and to help thicken up the roots. We still have a large selection of bedding plants. We received a large shipment of tomatoes, peppers plus many melons and cucumbers. Stop by and see the flowers that are available. Also please note that we will be closed Monday for Memorial Day as well as Mondays moving forward. Have a great weekend.

Spring is springing and the temperatures are looking good, if only the wind would stop blowing. Most lawns are starting to look pretty green. If yours still has a few yellow patches, wait a couple more weeks before worrying too much.

Our greenhouse is starting to fill up with veggie plants! We have a good selection of tomatoes and peppers in 6-packs. Annual flowers are starting to show up as well, including quite a few hanging baskets already...
