Garden Tips from Fox's

We hope everyone has had a good winter and are as excited for Spring as we are. As the snowstorms last week reminded us, It’s still a little early to be thinking about tomatoes in the garden.

It is however a good time to start thinking about planting more frost tolerant plants in your veggie garden. Our onion sets, shallots, seed potatoes and asparagus crowns are all in stock now and can be planted anytime. We have red, white and yellow onion bulbs as well as Walla Walla and Candy Onion plants. Seed potato varieties include Golden Globe, Sangre Red and Rocky Mtn Russet. Plant onions and potatoes now for mid to late summer harvest. Our Mary Washington Asparagus crowns are 2 year old crowns, which will save you lots of time compared to seed. Asparagus shouldn’t be harvested until it’s third year so plant the crowns now for next year’s harvest.

There are also many veggies you can seed directly outside now, such as peas, carrots, radish, beets, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. We have a row cover called seed guard that can be used to blanket the seeds for added protection until they get established. By the end of the week, we should also have broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale plants ready to go as well.

More tender plants that take a little longer to germinate like tomatoes and peppers can be started by seed indoors now. We are stocked up with seed, soil, planting trays, heat mats and grow lights.

We have only heard of minor damage on bedding plants, but trees were slightly damaged. Trim any branches that are broken and spray a small amount of pruning sealer on the tree's fresh cut. Just a reminder that if you applied a pre-emergence in mid March or April, it’s time to reapply this product to keep from getting weeds sprouting up later in the summer. It is also time to reapply fertilizer to the lawn to help it keep that deep green color and to help thicken up the roots. We still have a large selection of bedding plants. We received a large shipment of tomatoes, peppers plus many melons and cucumbers. Stop by and see the flowers that are available. Also please note that we will be closed Monday for Memorial Day as well as Mondays moving forward. Have a great weekend.

Spring is springing and the temperatures are looking good, if only the wind would stop blowing. Most lawns are starting to look pretty green. If yours still has a few yellow patches, wait a couple more weeks before worrying too much.

Our greenhouse is starting to fill up with veggie plants! We have a good selection of tomatoes and peppers in 6-packs. Annual flowers are starting to show up as well, including quite a few hanging baskets already...
