Garden Tips from Fox's

Get a Jump on the Season

Pre emergent herbicide used early in Spring to prevent the sprouting of weeds.

With beautiful weather in the forecast, Spring feels near. Before long tulips won't be the only thing sprouting so it's time to start thinking about applying pre emergent herbicide to prevent weeds. Turf & Ornamental Granules can be applied to the landscape or the lawn and will prevent seeds from germinating. It's a good idea to apply it once near the first of April and again near the first of June for continual coverage for the season.

We have onion sets and shallots available. These can be planted anytime now. Mix in peat moss or compost at the time of planting to help keep the soil loose, allowing for larger bulbs.

For those of you looking to get your garden started indoors, we are fully stocked with all our seed, soils and supplies. A good rule of thumb when starting tomato and pepper seeds indoors is to plant your seeds 6-8 weeks before you plan on moving them outside. Be sure they have plenty of light while indoors to prevent them from getting leggy.

We have only heard of minor damage on bedding plants, but trees were slightly damaged. Trim any branches that are broken and spray a small amount of pruning sealer on the tree's fresh cut. Just a reminder that if you applied a pre-emergence in mid March or April, it’s time to reapply this product to keep from getting weeds sprouting up later in the summer. It is also time to reapply fertilizer to the lawn to help it keep that deep green color and to help thicken up the roots. We still have a large selection of bedding plants. We received a large shipment of tomatoes, peppers plus many melons and cucumbers. Stop by and see the flowers that are available. Also please note that we will be closed Monday for Memorial Day as well as Mondays moving forward. Have a great weekend.

Spring is springing and the temperatures are looking good, if only the wind would stop blowing. Most lawns are starting to look pretty green. If yours still has a few yellow patches, wait a couple more weeks before worrying too much.
