Garden Tips from Fox's

Our greenhouse is starting to fill up with veggie plants! We have a good selection of tomatoes and peppers in 6-packs. Annual flowers are starting to show up as well, including quite a few hanging baskets already. We will also be receiving a large order of herbs before the weekend. Remember to keep an eye on the forecast as a freeze will kill many of these plants. If you want to make sure you get the varieties of plants you want now, you can leave them in the pots and move them indoors at night until there’s no longer a chance of frost.

Peonies are an amazing, large flowered, long-lived perennial. They typically bloom heavily in late Spring or early Summer. We have five different varieties available now: red, yellow, white, soft pink and pink with a white ring. These peonies are in 2 gallon pots and are off to a nice start. Peonies like full sun and well draining soil. Planting peonies too deep can prevent them from blooming, so don’t plant them any deeper than they’ve been planted in the pot. Consider placing a peony ring around the plant before it gets too large to support the heavy blooms and prevent stem breakage.

The trees with white blossoms right now on Northern Ave are flowering pears, and we have three different varieties of them. Redspire, Cleveland and Capital Pear trees all get 35-40 feet tall, but have varying widths to suit different spaces. The Redspire gets 20 feet wide, the Cleveland 15-20 feet wide and the Capital just 12-15 feet wide. These trees grow in a natural pyramidal form, can handle poor soils and tolerate our summer heat well.

We have only heard of minor damage on bedding plants, but trees were slightly damaged. Trim any branches that are broken and spray a small amount of pruning sealer on the tree's fresh cut. Just a reminder that if you applied a pre-emergence in mid March or April, it’s time to reapply this product to keep from getting weeds sprouting up later in the summer. It is also time to reapply fertilizer to the lawn to help it keep that deep green color and to help thicken up the roots. We still have a large selection of bedding plants. We received a large shipment of tomatoes, peppers plus many melons and cucumbers. Stop by and see the flowers that are available. Also please note that we will be closed Monday for Memorial Day as well as Mondays moving forward. Have a great weekend.

Spring is springing and the temperatures are looking good, if only the wind would stop blowing. Most lawns are starting to look pretty green. If yours still has a few yellow patches, wait a couple more weeks before worrying too much.

Now is a good time to start thinking about fertilizing your trees and shrubs. Jirdon Tree & Shrub Fertilizer is our favorite because it has a great formula for our region and encourages strong and steady growth...
