GARY'S GARDEN TIPS // JULY 26, 2013
Hornworms are large worms that chew on tomato and dill plants. Cabbage loopers are medium size caterpillars that chew on broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and other cabbage family. Both of these pests can be easily controlled with Dipel Dust or Thuricide. Dust or spray the plants lightly in the morning or evening. These products are very safe to use on edibles.
Weeds have started to germinate more since we've had nice rains. Try to control them while they are small and haven't seeded yet. Scuffle hoes work nice for small areas, or for large areas use "Killzall Weed & Grass Killer". Killzall is a non-selective weed killer that can be sprayed next to trees and shrubs, but not on the foliage of desirable plants. Once it hits the soil it is inactive. You can re-plant in 7-days after the product has had time to get into the plant's system.
Fertilize your trees, shrubs, and roses for the last time this year. The middle of August is the cut-off for feeding woody plants. Use "Bills's Rose Food" for the roses and Jirdon Tree and Shrub for other woody plants. These both have iron and sulfur, plus a balance of major nutrients.
