GARY'S GARDEN TIPS // JUNE 21, 2013
Very small black insects known as flea beetles are starting to damage some vegetables and flowers. The cabbage family and radishes are some of their favorite veggies, and alyssum is the flower they prefer. Applying “Eight Dust” will stop the damage for about 1-2 weeks. Re-apply if it gets washed off.
We have finally been able to find an inexpensive ladies glove that has a gauntlet to help protect arms from being injured. These are called “Thornguard Gloves”. As the weather gets hotter be sure to raise your mower height to 3 inches or higher. This will prevent you from having to water as often and help the roots go deeper into the soil.
If you have a few plants that are struggling or didn’t make it, we still have a good selection of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and melons. We also have colorful flowers if you need to fill in some empty spots or want to plant in containers.
If snails or slugs are a problem set out shallow pans or pie lids with beer in them to attract and drown them. If your slugs and snails are teetotalers, use a product we carry called “Sluggo”. This is bait that kills them, and is safe for dogs.
