Gary's Garden Tips // March 7, 2013
I hope you all had a great winter, and are ready to get outside and start enjoying your yards and gardens again. Now is a good time to start plants indoors. This includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and okra. Wait another month for melons and squash varieties. We have grow lights, starter soil, flats, and containers to help you get started. In addition, many types of seed are available to choose from.
We have received our shipment of onion sets. These can be set out anytime, and are available in yellow, white, and red. Onions like a loose soil, so be sure to work in lots of organic material such as sphagnum peat or cotton boll blend. Don't forget to fertilize when planting. High phosphate fertilizer works best, such as Ferti-Lome vegetable food, or Jirdon vegetable food.
Soil Activator can be applied to your lawns now to help rid your lawn of thatch. This is much easier than hand or power raking. This product decomposes the thatch, and turns it back into the soil to help improve growing conditions.
